The Heat Pump Skills Gap?
A recent study conducted by
Censuswide, commissioned by Energy Efficiency at City Plumbing, surveyed
heating installers on their current understanding of renewable technologies in
the heating market and whether they intend to become certified to install them.
In particular, the survey queried installers about their current knowledge of
heat pumps.
The results from the survey indicate that more
work is necessary to provide installers with adequate information on the topic,
encourage them to seek training, and address their concerns. The government's
goal is to have 600,000 heat pumps installed annually by 2028 to achieve
national Net Zero targets. However, last year's figure was between 60,000 and
70,000, and installers require additional information on how to get involved.
The survey discovered that 44% of
installers do not know where to obtain training, and only 27% find it simple to
locate a course near their residence. Only 18% of installers currently install
heat pumps, and just 6% have MCS certification.
Additionally, 32% of installers
are unaware of the government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme in England and Wales,
which provides discounts for homeowners who switch to a heat pump if they use a
certified installer. Only 45% of installers are confident in their ability to
describe the benefits of heat pumps to customers.
Clearly, these findings indicate that if
the Net Zero targets are to be achieved, urgent attention is required. As an
industry, training must be made more accessible, and installers interested in
upskilling should be supported. The survey revealed that 49% of installers
would consider becoming MCS certified if a course were available locally, and
82% agreed that certification would benefit their careers.
The Energy Efficiency Centre has
opened its first location in Farnborough, Hampshire, where installers may receive
training. However, the entire sector must collaborate to achieve national
objectives. Only time will tell.
